Hillcrest Elementary Door Policy
August 21, 2017
I am excited to get started with another school year here at Hillcrest Elementary! In an effort to keep kids safe when entering and exiting the building I have implemented a door policy for our kids. I have also added a seating policy for our lunchtimes to help reduce messes and keep things running clean here at school. In an effort to remind you of the door policy and lunchroom seating policies I am sending you this note.
For lunchtime I have implemented a seating chart by zones. Kids are able to sit with the kids in their grade and have lunch with their grade at four tables. They are only assigned by grade, not seat by seat, so they can sit with friends from across their grade. As the kids leave the tables we are able to clean them and have them ready for the next grade. This policy helps us to reduce germs and allergens that can get passed from sitting where another student sat previous to the current use. Additionally, by cleaning the tables after each use it helps us to clean up any small spills that may not have been reported to the lunch staff, like a smudge of ketchup on a seat.
For entering and exiting the building. Students may enter any of the doors in the morning as they enter the school. Upon entering the school students can enjoy breakfast or go to their grade's designated door area to sit and chat with friends, read or finish up any school work. Having doors marked with student gathering areas helps my morning hall monitors to ensure that kids are safe and warm (they can come in and sit by the doors inside during those cold or wet days). Also, if there was an emergency in the morning or afternoon, we could know where the kids are congregated by grade. That way if we need to find a first grader we can go right to the first grade door and find them safely and quickly. Likewise, if there was an emergency that was taking place we would have all of the kids in organized areas of the school and could quickly respond to gather them in an orderly fashion to get them to classrooms or an evacuation point. Without doing this we would lose valuable time trying to look around to find them here or there, or hope that they would be listening to an announcement that they might or might not have hard or responded to. When leaving the school we can ensure that students leave from designated areas, this helps to lessen congestion in the hallways and reduce the anxiety and possible injury of students as they all exit the building. I understand that there are siblings that may need to meet before they leave school. In these cases I encourage you to make a family plan for meeting outside the building and then going home together. For bus students they can walk the entirety of the school towards the buses and then exit from the north doors. (Please see visuals below).
I want you to know that I am committed to a clean and safe school. While we cannot prevent every eventuality we can help minimize the risks and be more ready to respond in the event of any need. Please talk to your kids about how these systems work. Talk to them about safely crossing the roads and avoiding strangers and any other safety concern that you have. Please let me know if you have questions or concerns.
All the best,
Morning waiting areas for Preschool and Kindergarten are at the doors on the north side of the building. First grade waits at the main doors on the west side of the building. Second grade waits at the doors at the southwest corner of the paved play area. Third graders should wait at the southernmost doors on the east side of the building. Fourth grade waits at the southernmost doors on the west side of the building. Finally, fifth grade's assigned waiting location is at the doors on the south side of the building.
Exit doors for Preschool and Kindergarten and bus kids are the doors on the north side of the building. First and Second Grades exit at the main doors on the west side of the building. Third, Fourth and Fifth Graders can exit at the doors at the southwest corner of the paved play area or at the southernmost doors on the west side of the building.
